If you've been anywhere near a braiding salon in the last few years, you've heard the word "knotless." It's become one of our most-requested styles at Aziza African Hair Braiding, and once you understand the technique, it's easy to see why.
What Makes Knotless Braids Different?
Traditional box braids start with a small knot of added hair secured at the root, which can create tension right at the scalp. Knotless braids skip that step entirely — your stylist starts by braiding your own natural hair, then feeds in small amounts of extension hair gradually as the braid grows. The result is a braid that starts thin and natural at the root and gradually reaches full thickness, with no knot pulling at your scalp.
Why Clients Love Them
- Gentler on your edges. Less tension at the root means less stress on the hairline — a big win if you've dealt with thinning edges in the past.
- More natural movement. Because the braid starts thin, it lays flatter and moves more like your own hair, especially near the part.
- Flexible styling. Knotless braids part cleanly, so you can create sleek styles, updos, or middle parts without visible knots showing through.
How Long Do Knotless Braids Last?
Most clients get 6 to 8 weeks out of their knotless braids, similar to traditional box braids. Because there's less tension at the root, many people find their edges hold up even better over that time — but the same aftercare rules apply: keep your scalp moisturized, protect your braids at night, and avoid excessive pulling.
Is Knotless Right for You?
Knotless braids are a great option for almost anyone, but they're especially worth considering if you have a sensitive scalp, have experienced edge thinning from past styles, or simply want a softer, more natural look. As with all our braiding services, pricing varies based on hair length, thickness, and desired size — we'll walk you through it during your in-salon consultation.
